Have you heard the story of David and Goliath? It’s one of my favorite events in history! Every time the subject of “fighting our giants” in life comes up, this story encourages me and gives me Holy Spirit bumps!
The story goes like this.
During the time when the story of David and Goliath took place there was a war between the Philistines and the Israelites. The Bible says there was a Philistine warrior named Goliath that was over 9 feet tall! For forty days, every morning and night he came out of his camp and challenged the Israelites. Goliath said he would fight anyone from the Israelite camp one-on-one and the battle between them would decide who won the war! When the Israelites heard Goliath they became very afraid, even King Saul was scared! But when David, a small shepherd boy, came to the camp and heard Goliath he completely trusted in God and was not afraid. David told King Saul that he would fight Goliath and that God would protect him. David went to a nearby stream and grabbed five smooth stones that he could use in his sling when he fought the giant. Goliath laughed when he saw David because he was a young boy, not a warrior like him. David told the Philistines that God was with him and no weapon is any match for Almighty God. David and Goliath ran to fight each other; David grabbed one of the smooth stones from the stream and slung it hitting Goliath right in the forehead! David beat Goliath with a sling and a stone and when the Philistines saw what happened they were so frightened that they ran away. God had a big plan for David, eventually he became the King of Israel!
One small rock, from a small boy, could make a giant fall!
So how does that have anything to do with “Mommin’ in 2018”?! Well, to start we aren’t JUST moms. God is making BIG moves in the small, every day things we do.
For me, it looks like getting up daily at 5:30 am, when my husband leaves for work, getting kids ready for school, teaching at my job full time during the day, then getting kids shuffled off the bus and from daycare. Then delegating farm chores and preparing supper. Then getting laundry started. Supper comes and goes(which is my favorite part of the day!! Us all gathered around the table!) Then dishes from supper..late nights…you get the idea yeah!? Haha I mean, it’s crazy right, all the things we have to do as moms? Then you add all the worldly chitter chatter about it and suddenly it’s like, “oh my gosh!” It can be hard to remember, in all the noise, that we do have a purpose and great calling in this mom thing! It would be easier some days to mentally throw in the towel. Like, yep, done. I know mommin’ looks different for each of us and so it should. That’s part of how God uses us to have community with each other. In all this though, God is using us like he did David. To take out big giants and use our small things for great victories!
Selfless, small acts of love through service are what is helping grow our sons and daughters up into loving, serving, kingdom minded adults! Showing our kids how to love and serve through our daily tasks is one of the best gifts we can ever give them.
You know, one day the laundry piles are going to be smaller, the sink will be less full of dishes and the house will be more still. So let’s just agree right now to do our personal best to let God use us where we are, find JOY in each moment and enjoy mommin’ through all the beautiful chaos NOW!
