- Did you know that there are bullies in the Bible? Yep, there are! Bullying has been a problem since the days Jesus himself walked the earth!! Just think. Joseph’s brothers bullied him because they were full of jealousy. Pharaoh and his buddies in charge of Egypt bullied Moses. Goliath bullied David for being smaller than Goliath. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego being bullied by King Nebuchadnezzar. The adulterous woman and the crowd that threw her at Jesus feet, as they threatened to stone her. And now, in the world we live in now, bullying has become a HUGE problem for kids and adults both. I was bullied as a kid by both adults and kids. I’m still being bullied in my adult life by people who are jealous and angry, for whatever reasons they may have. But what do we do about it? How do we handle a bully when it’s our kids being bullied? How do we handle a bully that’s bullying us, as an adult!? Welllllll, my first human thought (reaction) is sometimes to clobber that bully back thinking I would just feel better if I gave them a taste of their own poison or go all protective mama bear for my kid. But what does it solve to be terrible right back? I don’t think it solves a thing. It hasn’t solved a thing yet, it seems. So, in an effort to live more biblically, I searched the Bible to see what God says about bullying. Here’s what I’ve gathered. I hope it helps mamas!! And kids and teens, for those of you youngins reading this. ♥️
First and most importantly: God NEVER CHANGES.
We can look all over for lessons, materials and tips on how to handle this fragile subject but the truth of God’s word remains. So that’s where I’ll be looking!
••• Luke 6:27-28 “But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”
If you are being bullied, either as a child or a teen or even as an adult at work, don’t seek to get even, seek to pray for them. That’s not easy but it is biblical. Pray for those who hate us and then ask God to bless those who curse us and abuse us because if they do not know Christ, then they know not what they do. Meaning, without the truth, bullying is all they know to do.
••• Romans 12:18-19 “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”
If we seek revenge on someone who’s been bullying us, then we are taking the judgment seat of God. If we take these things into our own hands, it’s means we aren’t truly trusting God.
••• Psalm 138:7 “Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me.”
If we live with bullies then we walk in the midst of trouble. When have enough GODfidence, as I call it, to know that God would preserve our life, even with enemies to our left and right, then we win by faith.
And, in saving my VERY favorite verse for last but certainly not least—-
••• Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
This I try to remember every day because I STILL have a bully that I deal with daily. That I come in contact with daily. That lies about me and manipulates others opinions of me. When we are dealing with enemies (bullies) we might try (HARD) to remember that they are under the influence of the “god of this world” who has blinded them to the truth of God’s word. While there are really great resources and ways out there of fighting this issue head on…it comes down to one most important thing.
—— When they truly see God in US, that’s when we will start changing the bullies of this world. Apart from God we can do nothing.
