The late and beloved Billy Graham once said, “anxiety is the natural result when our hopes are centered in anything short of God and his will for us.” He wrote this quote in 1965. That was 53 years ago and it’s still true today! We cannot defeat anxiety without God. Satan uses anxiety to distract us from God’s truth and our precious time with God. Satan is a sly liar but God is wise and so good!
Anxiety, in my experience, can be crippling . It can run our minds right down a little rabbit hole of darkness. That is NOT what God wants for us or created us for. Think about it. In the beginning he created light. Why would he create light for us to walk in darkness!? Uh, he wouldn’t. He didn’t ever mean for us to be full of anxiety, worry and fear. (Again, Satan’s fault for tricking Eve.)
I have a tattoo on my foot from Phil 4:13 because it serves as a daily reminder that God is my strength. It’s on my foot because my feet are planted firmly on that truth. The entire chapter of Philippians is one to read. In Philippians we learn to not be anxious about anything but to give it all to good through prayer, with thanksgiving.
I know it’s all easier said than done. As moms, we worry about our kids, if we are failing in this mommin’ thing or if we are giving them the best foods. As wives, we worry about whether or not we are giving our best to our husbands because we had a full day of mom things. We worry if we are good enough or doing enough. Those who aren’t moms or wives even have so many worries of their own. Work and relationships being on that list. I’m a teacher and I’m always thinking of my school kids. I could go on and on BUT this is where that list stops because it’s NOT what God wants our focus on. He says to bring our cares to him and trust him to handle it. He says to trust his plans for us are good right? Philippians chapter 4 is plum full of goodness and hope. I would truly encourage you to just read it, soak up all its comfort and live it! 🙂 Oh, it’s so good!! Ok, moving on. Haha. The verse that I love for anxiety or even just if I need some encouragement is Phil 4:8-9.
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you”♥️
That last part though….practice these things and the God of PEACE will be with you. That alone warms my heart!
The key to even beginning to live a life free from anxiety is giving our life to God. When we do, we are better equipped to fix our thoughts on Him and his promises. I mean, how do we know his promises and fix our thoughts on him unless we give our life to him and read His Word!?
I almost (because I’m not perfect) always go to my Bible and open it up when anxiety starts to creep in. Or when it just hits me like a bus out of nowhere.
Life is meant to be full of JOY, peace and hope. When we are proactive in a battle with anxiety, fear and worry, we are already winning. When we walk into a battle with God as our shield and sword, it’s impossible to lose.
With love and grace,
