I had decided that I was going to stay inside last night. Warm and cozy as the freezing rain started. I had watched the 5 o’clock news so I knew that was only the start of the winter storm. It was going to be a good night to be snuggled up. As my husband showered and our toddler played with the dog, I was sitting on the couch, as the news got over and our home phone (yes,we still have one!!) rang. It was our county calling a code red for weather. You know…power outages likely, dangerous roads, stay warm. All the warnings and precautionary tid bits. I told my husband about the call, plugged our cells phones in so they would be fully charged in case (again, we have a home phone for outages but I’m a preparedness nerd!),made sure food was ready that needn’t be cooked, he made sure we had enough wood for the stove, I got our box of candles, lanterns and such and placed them where we could find them if the power went out. We had everything ready in case the weather did what it was predicted to do. Well, here we are 7am the next morning and we never lost power, the snow is beautiful laid out in the fields surrounding us and all is well. As I sit here this morning, God brought to light (see what I did there!? I LOVE good puns! God knows this too!) this thought. When the spiritual storms or storms (hardship) of our life come, sometimes without warning, are we ready? Do we readily have the light of Jesus in our hearts and at the forefront of our minds so that when the dark comes, we can step into his light?
When the enemy strikes like lightning, do we panic at the smoke of the fire or do we call on the one who can fix it?!
Do we have our bibles (His Word) in our hands/hearts daily to use as a lamp unto our feet and to light our path? (Psalm 119:105)
Are we staying plugged into Him for our daily “charge”? Are we praying for clarity/peace in the dark?
Are we letting the truth of God’s Word nourish us and be our souls food?!
All these things come to mind when I think of storms and I can’t help but wonder..ponder if I’m doing what I’m called to do to be “prepared”. If I am being honest, most days I don’t measure up! I am so thankful for his grace! So, this morning I’m reflecting on whether I’m as prepared as I could be for the storms of life, (though there is always something we can do to grow closer to God in our faith walk!) but also on how GOOD God is to be there during the storms. As a strong and mighty fortress for our protection and shelter!
A calm in the middle of the storm. A peace that allows rest amidst the howling winds and limited visibility for the road ahead.
This encourages me! Knowing that no matter how hard it is to see down the road, he is there! I hope it does you too and I pray you have a wonderful weekend dear friend!
Grit and grace,
