We live in the country and God often speaks to me through our surroundings. There are so many examples of this even in the Bible . This is happened with the bulls in our pens, the birds on my feeders and today with my house plant! When I first got this houseplant it was big and beautiful. Full of life! For a long while I intentionally watered it, nurtured it and paid attention to it so that I could keep it growing strong and healthy. And doing all those things brings me a simple kind of JOY. Doing this would keep the plant in a vibrant “spirit”. But, after a while life got busy and I became less intentional about checking on it every day to see what it needed to thrive. I feel like I’ve done this often in my spiritual life as well. Especially in the beginning of my walk with Christ. I would be diligent about giving attention to watering my “spiritual” plant. I would be in the Word daily and it would bring me JOY. In doing so I would grow and thrive. Be full of life. At some point though, life would get busy. I have admittedly forgotten about my “spiritual” plant if you will in those times and became less intentional about watering it and paying attention to it daily. And when that happens much like with this plant, I started to wilt and stop growing. In my spirit I would turn brown and start to fall apart. Then of course, to get back to that vibrancy and JOY, I would have to start all over again to regain strength, growth and nourishment. Which is what I’ve seen happen with my plant since I’ve started being more intentional with it again.
Think of the Word (BIBLE) as the source of life (water) for our spirits. To water us, grow us, be the light and nourish us. Then, like my favorite house plant here, we can face the SONshine and thrive in our happy place!
